The project in San Diego is a perfect example of designing a truly modern building using sustainable methods, Myefksi said.
The building itself has a green roof, and a unique cooling system, where instead of having exterior balconies, the exterior walls fold up and and become a shading device.
In a historic decision the San Diego City Council over turned the city’s Historic Resource Board which will allow the existing one-story building to be demolished and the new structure to be built, Myefski said. the Historic Resource Board previously deemed a service station on the site to be a historic landmark. to keep with the environmentally friendly aspect, the existing structure on the site will be completely re-used in the new building.
“Much of the material (in the new building) is also selected because it is locally available,” Myefski added.
The project does preserve Rosario Hall, another historic structure on the site, which will sit next to the new building.
Myefski opened his own architectural design practice in 1994 out of his Glencoe home. the second year of operation, Myefski brought in Charles Cook and the firm was named Myefski Cook Architects, with an office located in downtown Glencoe. While the firm shared staff, both architects did different projects. this fall, Myefski launched his own firm, Myefski Architects, Inc., and moved the business to the fifth floor of the Chandler’s building, 630 David Street in Evanston.
Myefski’s projects include residential, commercial and a mixture of master planning, downtown studies and various kinds of memorials.
Myefski has found great success designing three-story historical period buildings that sit well in the context of an existing downtown. such typical Myefski-designed projects include three office and retail spaces currently under construction in downtown Highland Park. his design style has expanded to include modern pieces with an environmentally friendly aspect. his area of business has also expanded from the Midwest to California.
” I chose California because it does not have the kind of history found in Chicago or the Midwest–so it is open to more modern pieces and sustainable design,” Myefski said.
The project is proposed to be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, certified building, Myefski said. the architect currently has three LEED certified buildings, including one he believes is the first on Central Street in Highland Park.
In fact, Myefski believes in sustainable design so much that his current office in Evanston is itself going through the LEED certification process.
