ATLANTA — BlueLinx Corporation, a leading distributor of building products in North America, has introduced a web-based resource that enables architects and builders to more easily find sustainable building products and track LEED points that can contribute to a building’s certification.
PureBlue®, BlueLinx’ ecoproduct offering, worked with its vendors to identify a wide breadth of over 200 building products that may contribute to over 600 LEED possible points across various topic categories. the Gold level certification within the 2009 edition of LEED for new Construction, Core & Shell, and Schools requires 60-79 points. the PureBlue listing offers architects, specifiers, LEED APs, project managers, builders, and retailers an excellent starting point for selecting building products that assists them on their path to structure certification.
“With the boom in LEED certified and mandated commercial construction and the impending growth of LEED Residential,” states George Judd, CEO, BlueLinx Corporation, “it is imperative that the market not only understands the opportunities that lie within, but also employs trusted core resources such as BlueLinx’ PureBlue product listing.”
There are some exceptionally robust products when it comes to LEED application, such as Hebel Aerated Concrete. Hebel is at such a level of sustainability, it is eligible to contribute a remarkable26 possible points. For details around this product go to the manufacturers web site, HERE. Other highly sought after LEED-oriented materials are those carrying Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. BlueLinx has geographically spread its FSC-COC certified facilities strategically across the United States to meet the growing demand of FSC products.
“The current government administration is showing unwavering dedication to sustainability,” comments Shiloh Kelly, National Sustainability Lead, BlueLinx Corporation, “which can be seen most clearly through stimulus fund deployment under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA). this has inadvertently fueled the employment of the LEED rating system providing communities with the means to access aspects of those funds.”
For example, Department of Energy (DOE) budget was $44 million in 2008 and as of last year, due to the ARRA, has had a funding increase to $3.1 billion. some states are responding by mandating LEED structure certification for all public buildings, as well as, commercial new construction and remodeling. the reason why is because through LEED they can meet the two primary components the ARRA may consider when appropriating these funds: job creation and energy conservation (energy efficiency incentives, sustainable innovations, and renewable energy).
